Album Review: Curious Toys – Harsha Iyer

Continuing today’s retro theme, here is the full-length debut from Chennai based solo project and one man band Harsha Iyer. Unlike the Nuggets-inspired sound of Trolley, Harsha Iyer is more Frank Turner influenced with a softer pop sound. “I find you boring” opens in this fashion, while “Over Cautious” has an early-to-mid-period Beatles feel. “Addiction” is more bright pop that will leave a smile on your face, and “The Offswitch” is what Lennon writing a McCartney song might sound like. Elsewhere, the early Byrds-influenced closer “Money” is another standout. A fine debut, and fine evocation of the lighter pop of the 60s.
